The Barbershop Is Not Just a Barbershop

By Peter Watson17 August 2026

A barber shop to men is more than just a haircut. That is not my line. That is what the barbers themselves said after a video I made about independent barbershops hit a hundred thousand views in about a day.

I expected the messages to say thank you for the shout-out, or cheers for putting us on the map. That is not what came through. What actually came through was this: a barbershop is one of the only places where a man sits down in a chair and gets asked about his life for twenty minutes. Not by a doctor. Not by a therapist. By the bloke with the clippers.

Think about that for a second. For a lot of men, that chair is it. That is the whole conversation. Twenty minutes, once a fortnight, maybe once a month. Someone asking how things are going and actually waiting for the answer.

This is what I mean when I say these places are infrastructure. Not a word I throw around. But when something is load-bearing for the mental and physical health of a community, it is infrastructure, whatever it says above the door.

The independent gym is not just taking your forty quid a month. It is keeping people moving, keeping people out of their heads, giving them somewhere to be at seven in the morning that is not their bedroom. The barbershop is not just tidying up your fade. It is keeping men talking at a time when men, famously, are not great at talking.

None of this shows up on a balance sheet. No one is counting it. The chain that opens a cut-price barbershop on the same street is not offering a like-for-like replacement, even if the price is lower and the booking app is slicker. You cannot replicate twenty years of the same bloke knowing your name, your kids' names, and roughly what kind of year you've had.

The argument I make about independent businesses is usually a numbers argument. Where the money goes, what the card fees cost, what stays in the town and what gets routed to a holding company offshore. That maths matters. But there is another ledger, and no one is keeping it, and it is the one where you add up everything these places do that was never on the receipt.

If there is an independent that has done more for you than you ever told them, tell them now, or at least tell someone. And if you want to back the campaign to keep them on the high street, the submission form is at keepthemopen.com.

Run an independent business, or love one? Tell us the story.
