A Wedding Is Twelve Independent Businesses All Working Together

By Peter Watson17 August 2026

Someone sent this to me on keepthemopen.com and I have not stopped thinking about it since.

A wedding might be the last event in Britain where every single supplier is independent. Not one chain in sight. You have got your photographer, your videographer, your caterer, your florist, your hotelier. The entire lot, all of them betting on themselves, all of them showing up for your one day.

Think about what that actually means. Twelve businesses, roughly, all coordinating. The auntie with the dietary requirement is handled by the caterer. The elderly couple who need a hand to their room are looked after by the hotelier. Nobody is following a corporate script. Nobody is waiting on a manager three tiers up to approve a decision. They just do it, because it is their name on the day.

We spend a lot of time in this conversation talking about the high street, the coffee shop, the local butcher. And that is right. But weddings show something the high street argument sometimes misses: independents do not just survive in isolation. They collaborate. A photographer recommends a florist. The florist knows the caterer. The caterer has worked the venue a dozen times. It is a whole ecosystem, and it has been running quietly and brilliantly without anyone in a head office making it happen.

It is, genuinely, the clearest proof we have that independents can handle something complicated and get it right.

So next time you are at a wedding, have a proper look around the room. Count them. The person carrying the lens, the one arranging the centrepiece, the one who got up before anyone else to prep the kitchen. All independent. All there because someone chose them specifically, not because they were the default option on a booking platform.

If you have got a wedding supplier worth shouting about, tell the story at keepthemopen.com.
