A Booked-Out Independent Is Not a Problem

By Peter Watson17 August 2026

Someone in my comments said they tried to support the high street but the tradesperson was booked out for six weeks. They meant it as a frustration. I want to flip that completely.

A busy independent is the best advert Britain has. Full stop.

When a bricklayer is twelve weeks out, when your local plumber can't fit you in until spring, that is not a failure of the independent sector. That is proof that people are choosing it. It means demand exists. It means the public is already doing the thing I keep asking them to do, and doing it in numbers large enough to overwhelm supply.

Yes, I understand it is annoying. I am not going to pretend that waiting six months for a job to get done is fun. But the reason for the wait matters. The wait is not because independents are slow or unreliable. The wait is because more people want them than there are of them right now. That is a completely different problem, and it is a problem worth having.

Here is what excess demand over limited supply actually means in practice. It means there is a gap in the market with a queue already forming in front of it. It means someone reading this, right now, could go and open a business in that trade and walk into a customer base that already exists and is already frustrated that nobody is serving it. The demand is there. The supply is not. That is the clearest possible signal the market can send to a prospective founder.

This is how new independent businesses get born. Not from a branding exercise or a gap-year idea, but from a real, visible, provable shortage of people willing to do the work. The booked-out plumber is not a problem to solve. He is an advert for the next plumber.

So if you have been waiting weeks for a local tradesperson, thank you. You are part of why this works. And if you have been thinking about going out on your own in a trade that cannot keep up with its orders, this is your sign that the timing is not the issue.
